π Role of Sufis in the Muslim Renaissance
π Meaning of the Word βSufiβ
There are two main explanations for the word Sufi:
β¨ 1. From the Arabic word βSafaβ β meaning βpurityβ
People believe Sufis were called this because they lived pure and simple lives.
β¨ 2. From the Arabic word βSufβ β meaning βwoolβ
Early Muslim spiritual people used to wear simple woolen cloaks as a sign of humility.
A Sufi saint named al-Rudhabari beautifully explained this by saying:
βA Sufi is the one who wears wool on top of purity.β πΏ
Another great scholar, Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni, suggested that the word Sufi may also come from the Greek word βSophia,β meaning wisdom π§ .
So, the word Sufi reflects purity, wisdom, and simplicity.
