📖 Meaning of the Word “Sufi”

There are two main explanations for the word Sufi:

✨ 1. From the Arabic word “Safa” — meaning “purity”
People believe Sufis were called this because they lived pure and simple lives.

✨ 2. From the Arabic word “Suf” — meaning “wool”
Early Muslim spiritual people used to wear simple woolen cloaks as a sign of humility.

A Sufi saint named al-Rudhabari beautifully explained this by saying:

“A Sufi is the one who wears wool on top of purity.” 🌿

Another great scholar, Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni, suggested that the word Sufi may also come from the Greek word “Sophia,” meaning wisdom 🧠.

So, the word Sufi reflects purity, wisdom, and simplicity.
