๐ Role of Sufis in the Muslim Renaissance
๐ Role of Sufis in the Muslim Renaissance
๐ Meaning of the Word โSufiโ
There are two main explanations for the word Sufi:
โจ 1. From the Arabic word โSafaโ โ meaning โpurityโ
People believe Sufis were called this because they lived pure and simple lives.
โจ 2. From the Arabic word โSufโ โ meaning โwoolโ
Early Muslim spiritual people used to wear simple woolen cloaks as a sign of humility.
A Sufi saint named al-Rudhabari beautifully explained this by saying:
โA Sufi is the one who wears wool on top of purity.โ ๐ฟ
Another great scholar, Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni, suggested that the word Sufi may also come from the Greek word โSophia,โ meaning wisdom ๐ง .
So, the word Sufi reflects purity, wisdom, and simplicity.
