☀️ Introduction to the Solar System
The Solar System is our cosmic neighbourhood. It consists of the Sun and all the objects that are gravitationally bound to and orbit around it.
The Solar System includes eight planets, five officially recognized dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and thousands of asteroids and comets. It is located within the Milky Way Galaxy.
The Sun is the central star of the Solar System and its enormous gravitational influence governs the motion of the planets and many other objects.

🌌 What Is the Solar System?
The Solar System is a gravitationally bound system consisting of the Sun and everything that orbits it.
Its major components include:
- The Sun — the central star
- Eight planets
- Dwarf planets such as Pluto and Ceres
- Natural satellites or moons
- Asteroids
- Comets
- Meteoroids and other smaller bodies
The Solar System extends much farther than the region occupied by the eight planets, including distant regions such as the Kuiper Belt and the much more distant Oort Cloud.
🌞 The Sun — The Center of the Solar System
The Sun is a star at the center of our Solar System. It is by far the most massive object in the Solar System and contains more than 99% of the available matter from which the Solar System formed.
The Sun’s enormous gravitational pull keeps the planets and many other objects in their orbits.

🌍 Inner Planets — The Terrestrial Planets
The first four planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars — are called the inner planets or terrestrial planets.
They are relatively small and have solid, rocky surfaces. NASA classifies these four planets as terrestrial planets.

🌀 Outer Planets — Giant Planets
The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are much larger than the terrestrial planets.
Jupiter and Saturn are classified as gas giants, while Uranus and Neptune are classified as ice giants.

☄️ The Asteroid Belt
The asteroid belt is a region of space located mainly between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
It contains numerous rocky objects called asteroids. These objects are remnants from the early Solar System. The material in this region never successfully combined to form a planet.

The main asteroid belt lies between Mars and Jupiter.
🌙 Moons — Natural Satellites
A natural satellite is a naturally occurring object that revolves around a planet, dwarf planet, or another celestial body. A moon is a natural satellite.
Earth has one natural satellite, the Moon.
Among the eight planets, Mercury and Venus have no natural moons. The giant planets have many moons.

🌑 Dwarf Planets
A dwarf planet is a celestial body that orbits the Sun and is massive enough for its gravity to make it approximately round, but it has not cleared its orbital neighbourhood of other objects.
There are currently five officially recognized dwarf planets in our Solar System:

An orbit is the path followed by an object as it moves around another object under the influence of gravity.
The planets travel around the Sun in elliptical orbits. Their motion is controlled mainly by the Sun’s gravity.

Comet
An icy body that orbits the Sun and can develop a visible coma and tail when it approaches the Sun.
Meteoroid
A relatively small rocky or metallic object travelling through space.
Meteor
The bright streak of light produced when a meteoroid enters an atmosphere.
Meteorite
A piece of a meteoroid that survives atmospheric passage and reaches the ground.
🌠 Formation of the Solar System
Scientists estimate that the Solar System formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from a dense cloud of interstellar gas and dust.
As the cloud collapsed under gravity, it formed a rotating disk called the solar nebula. The Sun formed at the center, while material in the surrounding disk gradually clumped together to form planets, moons, asteroids and other objects.

❄️ Kuiper Belt
The Kuiper Belt is a distant region beyond Neptune’s orbit containing many icy bodies. Pluto is one of the best-known objects associated with this region.
The Solar System therefore extends far beyond Neptune and includes many small icy and rocky bodies in its outer regions.
